In the test, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X was able to conquer a top position and even place itself in front of Intel’s top processor of the tenth Core i9 generation. The eight-core delivers excellent performance values in the benchmarks. It benefits from the current Zen 3 architecture and the associated faster internal data transmission and processing.

The processor is interesting for gamers because it does not cause any performance bottlenecks. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X offers eight cores including multithreading, so that the processor can process a total of sixteen threads or tasks at the same time.

The new thing about it is that AMD does not connect two quad-core units to one another via an interface, but rather the eight cores work in a cluster and can therefore exchange information quickly with one another.

It works with a standard clock rate of 3,800 MHz and can clock up to 4,700 MHz for power peaks. Just like the Ryzen 9 5900X, the processor supports DDR4-3200 RAM. This ensures a fast data throughput.

In contrast to AMD top model, the Ryzen 7 5800X can only access a 32 MB L3 cache due to its architecture, the size of the L1 and L2 cache, however, has remained the same.

In general, most AM4 400 and 500 series chipset series motherboards should be compatible with the processor. However, you will have to update the BIOS for this.

To be sure that your old motherboard is actually supported, you should check this on the respective manufacturer’s website, for example, before buying the processor.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X in the benchmark test

Little has changed in the manufacturing process for this model. AMD continues to manufacture the new generation of processors with a structure width of seven nanometers.

However, the Ryzen 7 5800X also shows a significant increase in performance in the benchmarks, mainly due to the number of instructions per clock cycle.

If you are looking for a current CPU for a gaming PC, you will find that the 5800X has the same performance capabilities as the top model, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, in the corresponding gaming benchmarks. And the new CPU also depends on the Intel processors and is even cheaper to buy.

In gaming, hardly any performance losses compared to the top model

The benchmark comparison shows one thing very clearly: The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X does not have to hide behind the excellent Ryzen 9 5900X, especially when it comes to games.

For example, the two processors in The Division 2 in Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) and with DirectX 12 support each achieve 146 fps (frames per second) and in Anno 1800 with similar settings they are the same with 144 fps on the same applies to Total War: Warhammer II.

This shows that the 5800X can hold its own against its big brother, at least in most current games. However, it is hardly surprising that the processor cannot quite keep up with the top model in terms of video encoding and rendering, since the Ryzen 9 5900X has four more cores.

Despite a lot of power, no power guzzler

In terms of power consumption, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X has a maximum system power consumption of around 218 watts in comparison, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X uses 207 watts and the Intel Core i9 10900KF even uses 277 watts.

However, the comparison with Intel at the system level should be treated with caution, since the mainboard is of course also different.

The street price of the processor is currently around 450 euros. This is perfectly fine for the performance offered. However, there is no fan in this model either. Because this is not part of the scope of delivery. That’s a shame, because it reduces the price-performance ratio.

In times of heightened environmental awareness, the packaging must first and foremost be questioned, because hiding a single processor in a large box is simply no longer up to date.
