  • Testing Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti Specification

In the test, the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti proves to be a strong graphics card at a mid-range price. It handles games in full HD resolution with ease, but gaming in 4K with all the details is also possible in some cases at around 60 fps.

In addition, the Geforce RTX 3060 Ti is nice and quiet, short enough for small PC cases and, with an RRP of 399 euros, also significantly cheaper than its larger sister models - if it is also available at this price.

Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti in the test: Great performance for most gamers
With the sibling models RTX 3070 and RTX 3080, Nvidia has placed powerful graphics cards in the upper middle class and high-end. But apart from the fact that these cards - if at all - at the time of testing the RTX 3060 Ti are only enormously overpriced, not everyone wants to spend over 500 euros on a graphics accelerator alone.

The RTX 3060 Ti 8GB shows that it doesn't have to be: In benchmarks, the 400 euro card reaches the level of last year's RTX 2080 Super. On average, it is only around 7 to 12 percent (Full HD / UHD) weaker than the RTX 3070, but theoretically costs 20 percent less. In the following table we compare the two graphics cards.

We also tested the slightly overclocked variant Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Twin Edge OC. This actually performed identically in the test, but the case is a bit shorter.

A GA104 GPU sits in the Geforce RTX 3060 Ti. This can also be found in the RTX 3070, but has been trimmed for this graphics card: 4,864 instead of 5,888 shaders, the clock frequencies only range from 1,410 to 1,665 MHz compared to the 1,500 to 1,725 MHz of the RTX 3070.

Nvidia has also cut other components: the 152 tensor units (3070: 184 TE), 38 RT cores (3070: 46 RTs) and 152 texture units (3070: 184 TMUs).

Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti is Cooler for the small PC
Nvidia installs its own cooler in the reference model, which has the waste heat under control. The loudness of the fans never exceeds 1.8 sone even under full load. This means that the noise development is not noticeable even when gaming without headphones.

The case is also quite short: it measures around 24 centimeters and is therefore suitable for smaller PC cases. The power consumption is also inconspicuous: our entire system draws around 340 watts under full load.

The new graphics cards use PCIe 4.0, assuming a corresponding mainboard. This has little effect on the performance of the graphics card, since PCIe 3.0 is not yet a bottleneck. However, Ampere now directly accesses the data from the hard drive and SSD via Microsoft's DirectStorage API.

This has the advantage that the data does not first have to make the detour via the possibly slow CPU. This in turn means that an SSD for the PCIe 4.0 interface can theoretically significantly accelerate a game. But only if a game developer programs this function in, it doesn't work automatically.

Furthermore, Nvidia installed both the well-known DisplayPort 1.4a and HDMI 2.1. The new HDMI port in particular is very interesting, as this version supports dynamic refresh rates for smoother images as well as 8K resolution at 60 Hz or 4K resolution at 120 Hz with HDR. So you can finally use your PC on a compatible home TV without compromising.

The card also gives you access to features such as Nvidia Reflex, Nvidia Broadcast and Nvidia Studio. You can find out more about this and about the key graphic functions DLSS and ray tracing in our review of the RTX 3080.
