Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Review – Very strong router with wifi 6

The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 is a high-performance router with Wifi 6 that showed great performance in the test. We measure very high transfer rates, and the handling is also convincing. We also like the extensive equipment with numerous interfaces.

Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Review

The design is eye-catching, for example the router has lighting. The high performance of the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 also takes its toll, because the router is not particularly economical.

Well-rounded configuration with a gaming focus

The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 scores thanks to Wifi 6 (aka 802.11ax) with high transfer rates and improved performance with multiple connected devices. The router is also backwards compatible with older standards such as 802.11ac or 802.11n.

In theory, the router is capable of data rates of 1,148 Mbit/s on the 2.4 GHz band and 4,804 Mbit/s at 5 GHz via WiFi 6, theoretically up to 4,333 Mbit/s via WiFi-AC (WiFi 5) s in it. Both Wifi 5 and Wifi 6 support MU-MIMO (Multiple User – Multiple Input Multiple Output).

The “Target Wait Time” feature is also interesting, as it plans the data transmission better and connected devices can remain idle for longer. Using the three-stage gaming acceleration, online gamer can also set a higher priority for the corresponding data packets.

The router has four Gbit LAN ports for wired Internet and one Gbit WAN (Wide Area Network) port, via which several LAN networks can be connected. Another Ethernet port even offers speeds of 2.5 Gbit per second, and two USB-A 3.0 interfaces are available. The beautiful, but not exaggerated, RGB lighting also makes a visual impression.

In addition, the router can be used both as a printer server and for FTP or VPN, and AiCloud 2.0 from Asus is on board as a cloud service. The Rapture GT-AX11000 is, however, a pure Internet router, so you do not need a DSL or cable modem. At just under 400 euros, the gaming router as such is also quite an expensive pleasure.

Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000: Strong, but not perfect WiFi 6 performance

In the test, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 delivered a very good performance. With the Asus PCE-AX58BT as the remote station, we measured a value of 693 Mbit/s under optimal conditions, which drops to 406 Mbit/s under more realistic conditions.

Using two remote stations at the same time, we come to an average of 589 Mbit/s, while the router with a Huawei P30 connected in parallel via WiFi 5 performs at an average of 582 Mbit/s.

Overall, these are really good values, but the Asus router cannot hold a candle to the current Wifi 6 performance winner, the Netgear Nighthawk AX12, with its 745 Mbit/s under optimal conditions. The AVM Fritzbox 6660 also delivers slightly better values and costs only half. However, neither can compete with the features of the Rapture GT-AX11000.

Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 in test: The router needs more power

Unfortunately, the Asus Rapture GT-AX11000 doesn’t exactly turn out to be an energy saver in the test. We measured a quite high value of 16 watts in standby and other models like the D-Link DIR-X1860 or the Asus RT-AX58U are significantly more efficient with 5 to 6 watts.

During the data transfer, the consumption rises to around 22 watts, which is one of the highest values in our entire list of the best. So if you want to keep your electricity costs as low as possible, the GT-AX11000 is the wrong address in this regard.

AVM FRITZ! Box 6660 Cable

If you can do without tri-band WLAN, WAN ports and several USB 3.0 interfaces, the Wifi 6 model from AVM is also well advised. The AVM Fritzbox 6660 particularly impressed in the test with its good equipment including telephony and cable modem as well as the very good performance of an average of 732 Mbit / s under optimal conditions.

The power consumption of 13 watts in standby and 16 watts in operation is also somewhat more pleasant than the Asus model and the price that is only half as high should be another selling point.

When looking for alternatives, our WLAN leaderboard is also very suitable. Here you will find all the current models we have tested sorted according to their overall rating, price-performance ratio or certain aspects and sub-categories.
