Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 Special for video enthusiasts

The Panasonic DC-S5 proves itself to be a strong challenger to the compact full frame cameras from Sony, Canon or Nikon. In addition to a constantly high resolution across all ISO values and a lavish equipment, it shines with good usability and haptics. Your video function with many professional features stands out particularly positively. The range of interchangeable lenses leaves something to be desired. The price is just below the 2,000 euro mark and is very attractive for what is on offer.

Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 in the test: full format with plenty of video power
In the past, cameras with full-frame sensors (35mm) were primarily developed for professional photographers. Now all manufacturers are also targeting the target group of ambitious photographers and are increasingly bringing compact and relatively inexpensive models onto the market. The latest addition from Panasonic is the Lumix DC-S5. In the test center it has to prove whether it can keep up with the established full-format competition from Sony, Canon and Nikon.

The Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 camera is the manufacturer's smallest full-format DSLM to date and is based on the handy dimensions of the in-house GH5. The Lumix DC-S5 weighs around 700 grams. We like the operation a lot: The grip is ergonomically designed, all fingers of the right hand can be reliably placed. The camera has quite a few direct buttons, all buttons, knurled wheels and switches are very easy to reach and some functions can be freely assigned to them.

The 3-inch display with a high resolution of 1.8 million pixels houses a settings menu that can be operated by touch. The display can be folded out and swiveled 180 degrees - great for self-portraits. The electronic 120 Hz viewfinder has a pleasantly high resolution of around 2.36 million pixels and offers an image field coverage of 100 percent. Its magnification factor of 0.74 ensures easily recognizable motifs.

When Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 comes to connectivity, the Lumix doesn't have to hide: There is a 3.5 mm connection for external microphones and headphones, Micro-HDMI Type-D, USB-C and a 2.5 mm remote release socket. You save on a fast UHS-II card and, if necessary, in parallel on a UHS-I card in the double slot. WLAN is no longer a special feature of modern digital cameras.

Unfortunately, the range of compatible lenses is still limited. The relatively new L-bayonet has just over 30 different optics with full-frame and APS-C image circles. Panasonic has presented a suitable kit lens for the camera with a focal length of 20-60 mm and an aperture of f / 3.5-5.6.

Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 Low noise and high resolution
The small image sensor has a sufficiently high resolution of around 24 megapixels or 6,000 x 4,000 pixels. A sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 51,200 is available and expandable to ISO 50 to ISO 204,800. Of 2,400 possible line pairs per image height, the Lumix (with the kit optics) represents a maximum of 1,740 line pairs a respectable value at ISO 100. At ISO 12,800 there are still a good 1,634 line pairs, which is a pleasantly constant performance. The deadleaves measurement paints a similar picture. These values can be increased significantly with higher quality optics.

Problems with noisy images are manageable at Panasonic: Annoying interfering pixels are only noticeable on the monitor from ISO 3,200, but then only with high magnification. Even at ISO 12,800, printed images look very clear. This fact is due to the strong dual ISO architecture.

Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 - The prime discipline of films
The Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 offers a complete package of speed and flexibility. At the top it only comes to seven frames per second, but bravely holds out the sprint beyond the 1,000 JPEGs. The short shutter speed of 1 / 16,000 s is impressive and will certainly delight one or the other sports photographer.

The shutter release delay also makes a good impression: With manual focus, we landed at 0.10 s in the test and with live view and autofocus in daylight it was 0.20 s. The DFD system's eye, animal and face recognition is needed Daylight but occasionally a little longer to focus. But we really liked the customizable focus fields.

Typically for a DSLM from Panasonic, the Lumix DC-S5 really accelerates when it comes to moving images. UHD clips with up to 60 fps, 4: 2: 2 color subsampling and ten bit color depth raise the camera to a professional level. In Full HD, even 180 fps are possible. There is also a matching V-Log and V-Gamut image profile known from the in-house Vari-Cam. We also like the dynamic range of the Lumix. Years of experience from the GH series flowed noticeably into the development, very nice!

Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 Advantages:

  • Excellent imaging performance
  • Professional video features
  • Great feel and operation

Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 Disadvantage:

  • Lens range still very manageable and expensive
  • Burst speed only average
