Epson EcoTank ET-2720: Expensive Printer but Cheap in Printing

The Epson EcoTank ET-2720 is only worthwhile for multiple printers, because only then do the extremely low printing costs become noticeable.

Epson EcoTank ET-2720 Review: First expensive, then cheap

The quality of the device depends on the paper: great on special paper, somewhat mixed on normal paper also good for text, moderate for graphics.

This happens all too often to buyers of inexpensive multifunction devices: after a short time the ink cartridges are empty and replacements are only available at affordable prices. This cannot happen with the Epson EcoTank ET-2720: The ink tanks are huge, and refilling is cheap.

Many will rub their eyes at the price of the EcoTank: 280 euros and that without any special features in terms of equipment or speed. Comparably equipped competitor models with a similar speed are available for less than half.

But they often get the cheaper purchase price back later through the ink costs. The EcoTank has no replaceable cartridges, but four permanently installed tanks that each hold 65 milliliters of ink, five to ten times more than conventional ink cartridges.

This ensures great endurance and lowers costs: with one set of inks, for example, over 1,600 photos in the standard 10×15 cm format can be printed for just under 2 cents per image or 3,600 pages of text for 0.28 cents per page.

At most the paper is expensive. In the front right are the four ink tanks (black, yellow, magenta and cyan). Each tank holds 65 milliliters of ink, five to ten times more than conventional printers that work with replaceable cartridges.

Epson EcoTank ET-2720: Printing costs in comparison

The comparison with the Canon Pixma TS 5050 (test winner among the inexpensive multifunction printers ) and Brother MFC-J985DW (test winner among the multifunction printers with the cheapest printing costs ) shows how cheap the printing costs are.

Multiple printers run cheaper after 3,100 pages of text than with the Canon, compared with the Brother the Epson is cheaper after 360 photos.

Printing costs Epson EcoTank ET-2720 in comparison

Brother MFC-J985DW Canon Pixma TS5050 Epson EcoTank ET-2720
Cost per page of text 0.54 cents 7.00 cents 0.28 cents
Cost per graphic page 4.28 cents 10.44 cents 0.41 cents
Cost per photo (10×15 cm) 11.24 cents 17.22 cents 1.84 cents

Epson EcoTank ET-2720: Good for texts, great for photos

In terms of print quality, the EcoTank was not entirely convincing: it puts texts on paper in a legible manner, but takes a little time (for its price range). It took six seconds for a single page and 40 seconds for six pages.

It also prints photos rather slowly, but very nicely with deep black and very high contrast. But the Epson needs good photo paper for this. The Epson cannot fully demonstrate its quality on normal paper as in the graphic print test, the printouts are low in contrast and less detailed.

Epson EcoTank ET-2720: Sparse equipment

Epson has saved on the equipment. The EcoTank, for example, does not have a second USB socket and so cannot print directly from a camera or USB stick. The built-in scanner only reads single pages.

The automatic document feeder common in this price range is missing. In addition, the scan quality is rather mediocre. Copying works quickly: The Epson only needs twelve seconds for a page.

Epson EcoTank: savings option

Epson offers over 100 inkjet printers. A good quarter of these belong to the EcoTank series with extra-large ink tanks. Unfortunately, the EcoTank models are all expensive to buy.

They are therefore only worthwhile for multiple printers who get the higher price back through the lower printing costs. It starts with the EcoTank ET-2600 (180 euros). The most expensive model is the EcoTank ET-16500 (900 euros), which can also print in A3 format.

Epson EcoTank ET-2720 Pros:Extremely low printing costs

  • Good text printing
  • Good photo print

Epson EcoTank ET-2720 Cons:

  • Fair color printing on plain paper
