Epson Ecotank ET-4700 Review & Drivers Supports
Epson Ecotank ET-4700 has long term bargains with quality deficits. Instead of classic ink cartridges, the Epson Ecotank ET-4700 uses large refillable ink tanks. That pushes the running printing costs to a sensationally low level.
Epson Ecotank ET-4700 Review
As the test shows, this is clearly at the expense of print quality. The equipment with WLAN, fax, LC display and AirPrint is good, but the high purchase price is only partially covered.
Advantage
- Extremely low printing costs
- Environmentally friendly thanks to ink tanks
- Print via WiFi or USB
Disadvantage
- Prints very slowly
- Print quality just okay
- Very high purchase price
Epson Ecotank ET-4700 – Printing at a bargain price
The special feature of the Ecotank ET-4700 is its unusual ink filling system, in which the printer is equipped with four ink bottles instead of conventional ink cartridges.
They don’t have to be replaced either, instead they can be refilled if necessary. This not only protects the environment, but above all your wallet.
According to the manufacturer, a set of ink bottles is sufficient for up to 4,500 pages in black and white and even 7,500 pages in color. Epson sells the bottles for around 10 euros per color and thus achieved by far the lowest printing costs in our best list in the test.
The printing costs for a DIN A4 page with text are almost a ridiculous 0.2 cents, and the price for colored pages is only slightly higher at 0.3 cents.
Not a single printer on our best list comes close to this result; the next candidate would be the Canon Maxify MB5150 with a text page price of 1.1 cents.
However, this only pays off with high print volumes or in the long term. Because the purchase price of the Epson of around 450 euros is unusually high compared to current standard printers.
For this price, Epson offers a decent configuration. It has a 100-sheet paper feeder on the back and an automatic document feeder for 30 pages.
Ethernet and WLAN are also on board, so the candidate can be controlled wirelessly from a PC or mobile device. The latter do this using the free Epson iPrint app from the App Store or GooglePlay. On the printer itself, you control print jobs and configuration via the 3.7 cm LC display.
A fax machine is also integrated in the Ecotank ET-4700. This delivers a transmission speed of around three seconds per page and offers some useful extras with the address book, automatic redial, speed dial buttons and the page memory.
However, the range of equipment is not complete: Neither CD printing nor a duplexer for double-sided printing are available. We are used to different things in this price range.
The high price is not reflected in the equipment. With a weight of five kilograms and compact dimensions (37.5 x 347 x 23.7 centimeters), the Epson also finds its place in a private work area.

Epson Ecotank ET-4700 disappointment in core areas
After the impressive results in terms of printing costs, Epson’s services were all the more disappointing elsewhere: For example, we can only give a satisfactory grade for text printing.
The texts appear legible at 5,760 x 1,440 dpi and look fine in themselves. However, the work results cannot stand comparison with top quality.
The Epson Workforce Pro WF-C5710DWF, for example, the only candidate on the best list with a reasonably comparable price, delivers razor-sharp typeface in rich black, against which the Ecotank prints literally look pale.
On top of that, the Ecotank ET-4700 is also quite slow: We only count 6.6 pages per minute in text printing, while even significantly cheaper models such as the HP OfficeJet Pro 9012 work more than twice as fast.
Graphics and photos are delivered in a similarly leisurely manner, namely in 4:48 minutes and 2:49 minutes, respectively. Copies of black and white texts are still okay with 12 seconds.
These are basically incomprehensible contradictions: The printing costs are suitable for a professional company with a very high volume of printing, but the candidate is too slow for that, and the Epson is too expensive to buy for the thrifty private person, not least in view of the “only” good ones Furnishing.
