I have been using EPSON multifunction printers for many years. So far the Stylus Photo XP-860 which speaks for the longevity of the Epson printer. The Expression Home XP-452 steps into the same notch and fits seamlessly into the range of multifunction printers from EPSON.

NO USB cable is included in the scope of delivery. Either you use the printer via WLAN or you have to buy a cable yourself. However, a set of ink cartridges is included so that you can set up the printer right away.

During the initial installation, however, the ink channels are filled with color, which is why you can never print as much with the “first” cartridges as specified.

A set of new original cartridges is not that cheap with original Epson ink. You can easily spend € 60 and more. However, you can get quite cheap refills from some providers, but you shouldn’t buy them from anyone.

Cheap ink is often coarser-grained and quickly clogs the nozzles on Epson printers. Then you have to buy original ink to get the nozzles free again with expensive cleaning processes.

You can save yourself that if you buy the iColor ink from Pearl (costs about half the original ink) or another good supplier. But here, too, you should pay attention to quality.

However, this ink is not waterproof. The original ink, however, does. Documents don’t melt if a drop of water comes on them. This is very much the case with cheap inks. You have to be careful when you print out a parcel sticker and then bring the parcel to the post office in the rain.

The printout on photo paper is not affected because the photo paper absorbs the ink so far that water droplets can no longer cause damage.

The durability of the colors on the paper has meanwhile also improved a bit, but not nearly as good as with the original ink. You pay for that when you buy the ink from EPSON. So if you print out photos that you want to look at even after 15 years then you should use original ink.

So now enough of the ink and back to the printer! Unfortunately, there is only a hard-to-understand short manual in different languages in paper form.

Unfortunately, it is now common that detailed instructions are no longer included. This is then on the enclosed CD on which the installation software is also on it.

The installation of the printer is very easy. Insert the CD into the PC and follow the instructions. Finished. It’s that easy.

After you have set up the printer and integrated it into the network, you can also conveniently print from your smartphone or tablet if you have installed the Epson app.

The print quality is really good. It’s just an Epson and it can do it in professional quality. The printer is so fast that it doesn’t necessarily have to hide from laser printers. Sure, it doesn’t quite come close to the speed of a laser printer, but it is absolutely fast enough.

The paper tray, however, is not worth an EPSON. If you want to print out 10×15 photos, for example, you first have to take out the A4 paper and insert the 10×15. Is it done the other way around? It’s way too cumbersome.

I think it’s great that you have a single sheet feeder on the back of the printer. If you want to print something on cardboard or something like that, you can use it and don’t have to take out the paper compartment to put it there.

Unfortunately, the XP-452 does not have a duplex printing function, making it impossible to print on both sides of a sheet of paper in one go. Here you have to print the sheet from one side first and then insert it the other way around again to have it printed from the other side as well.

WorkForce WF-2830DWF scanners and copiers are very reliable and the results are of high quality. All in all, I am very satisfied with the results and can definitely recommend the Expression Home XP-452.

However, you have to be aware that the printing costs with original cartridges are quite high, but the prints are then waterproof and the color fidelity is maintained for many years.

By the way, you can use the settings to reduce the printing costs a little by setting the combination of text + image printing. In my opinion, the image quality for photos is absolutely sufficient and you save a lot of ink.

But as already mentioned above, you can also use “cheap ink”, but you have to make some compromises.

I would like to briefly reiterate another reviewer who mentioned a problem with the ink pads. These cushions are there to absorb excess ink when doing a cleaning process, for example.

By the way, you usually only have to do this if the nozzles are clogged with “cheap ink” in order to blow them free again. If you only use original ink, these cleaning processes are usually not necessary.

If these pillows are really full you can send your printer to Epson. But please take out the ink cartridges beforehand. These then clean the printer, reset the display, and replace the pads.

In addition, new cartridges are used to make a test run. All of this together costs just € 20 and the cost of sending it there. The return costs are also included.

That is really not too much. However, the whole thing takes at least two weeks, but then you get back a completely overhauled printer with a set of new ink cartridges. Anyone who is aware of this will not be disappointed by the Expression Home XP-452.
