Impressed in the test as a handy, lightweight creative camera with strong image quality and a bright zoom. The innovations can, however, be counted on one hand. If you already own the previous model, buying a new one is unlikely to be worthwhile. The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II only partially lives up to its name. Instead of a real successor, the creative camera feels more like a 1.5 update. In plain language, this means: the basic equipment of the two-year-old predecessor model remains the same. Only a handful of optimizations are introduced: a bulb exposure that now works longer than 60 seconds; continuous autofocus even during Full HD videos with 50p; a series recording increased from six to eight images per second, which however only allows 32 instead of unlimited series length. Plus a sharp 3-inch touchscreen that folds forward for selfies. So far, so the innovations. That's a good thing, because we can certify that the new model also has a very good imaging performance. A 1-inch sensor with a resolution of 20 megapixels is responsible for this. The comparatively large image chip delivers a maximum of 1,698 line pairs per image height with minimum light sensitivity ISO 125. Class that the high sharpness remains unchanged even with increasing ISO up to 1,600 and thus in low light. In the 100 percent view, however, noise is already evident from ISO 800. After all, the manufacturer was able to slightly improve the reproduction of details. It's not much, but it is measurable. Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II: Bright optics with weaknesses The very good imaging performance in conjunction with the bright and optically image-stabilized 4.2x zoom is particularly attractive. F1.8 at 24 mm, F2.8 at 100 mm calculated in 35mm format, allow short shutter speeds and nicely cropped motifs against a blurred background. However, there is a disadvantage in the corners, where the sharpness decreases by around 30 percent. A problem that the first G7 X already had to struggle with. The equipment also has parallels. A seven meter flap flash, a freely assignable aperture ring and PSAM modes including HDR exposure form the basic photo equipment. WLAN and NFC for wireless data transmission and remote control are also included. The front right side is now adorned with a small bulge that makes the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II comfortable to grip. However, the camp should be split by the closely spaced keys, where a control pad for navigating the well-known Canon system menu squeezes right in the middle. Big hands should therefore find the camera, which weighs just over 300 grams, a bit too fiddly. The battery life of a maximum of 310 releases and 110 video minutes is also a bit short.
