Scanning slides doesn't have to be expensive: The CanoScan 5200 F costs less than 150 euros and was among the top 10 scanners in the test. In addition to paper originals, the device scans up to four slides or six negatives at the same time.

With a resolution of 2400 x 4800 dpi, the CanoScan 5200 F is one of the all-round devices. Thanks to the integrated transparency unit, it not only scans photos and documents, but also entire negative strips or up to 4 framed small-image slides in good quality.

The preview of 4 slides took 23 seconds, for scanning with 1200 dpi without correction functions the device needed 3 minutes 10 seconds, with correction (removing color, exposure and scratches) the whole thing took about 5 minutes.

Even occasional users can quickly achieve their goals using the “Canon Toolbox” software. All possible tasks from photo scans to converting a scan into a PDF are clearly lined up here. The steps are largely self-explanatory.

In the test laboratory, the scanner convinced overall with a very good image quality (95%) and simple operation. In terms of speed measurements, the Canon device lags behind the equally expensive Epson Perfection 2580 Photo.

Conclusion: A clear buying tip for everyone who needs a flatbed scanner for standard tasks and would like to scan old slides and negatives every now and then. Price and performance are right, software and documentation are exemplary.

Alternative: Epson Perfection 2580 Photo with film feed and even easier operation in automatic mode.

Advantages:

  • Good software equipment
  • Easy handling
  • Holder for slides and negatives

Disadvantage:

  • No automatic film feed
  • Hardly any presets for beginners
