How did the keyboard layout come about?
Keyboard is to be seen everywhere, but hardly anyone knows: The very first line on the keyboard reveals that the letters are not arranged in accordance with the alphabet. This sequence is of course no coincidence.
Keyboard layout history
The inventor had his idea patented in the middle of the 19th century. Because with this layout he saved himself and others a lot of trouble for the following reason. We also show you a trick in the video on how to get your keyboard clean in no time.
When it comes to an order for letters, the first thought immediately jumps to the alphabet. But a look at our keyboards quickly shows that the arrangement follows a different pattern here.
The “A” is in the second row of letters and the “B” is even in the third. To derive this structure, it goes back to America in the year 1868. There, the journalist Christopher Latham Sholes had his invention patented: He made a typewriter whose letters were deliberately structured according to a special sequence.
The reason for this was the little hammer on the typewriter. On the way to the ribbon, they tended to get tangled up. Sholes successfully counteracted this problem.
Based on statistical studies of common letter combinations in the English language, he developed the “Qwerty” layout. This logic was adopted for the Central and Eastern European region and translated into the “Qwertz” sequence. The name describes the first six letters on the keyboard.
Whether an analog or digital keyboard, this system has been firmly established since then and has not yet allowed a second scheme to take hold.
The buttons have a variety of uses. On the one hand, the usual input of letters, numbers and special characters. On the other hand, you can also use the buttons to control commands. The implementation takes place via so-called short cuts.
Some buttons have multiple assignments. Therefore it is of course important to know which typing will achieve the desired character or the planned control. The [Fn] keys in particular have some special features.
You will find these function keys in the top row. For example, if you press the [F2] key after selecting a document, you can change the file name directly. This saves you a lot of time compared to using the computer mouse.
