HP Envy Pro 6420: Slow all-in-one for graphics

The HP Envy Pro 6420 offers a wide range of features and functions for its low price. This includes scanning, copying and faxing as well as the Internet connection and the associated option of printing documents via smartphone.

HP Envy Pro 6420 Review

Graphics in particular are of high quality, while we have seen texts and photos printed better. It is also annoying that the Envy Pro 6420 takes a lot of time and the time it takes to print it for the first time is quite long. A certain hunger for ink also results in high printing costs in the long term.

HP Envy Pro 6420 Review: All-In-One with AirPrint

The HP Envy Pro 6420 is a classic all-in-one printer with WLAN connection. As such, it not only allows documents to be printed, scanned, copied and faxed, but can also be fed with print jobs via AirPrint or similar services using a smart device. The HP Smart app for Android and iOS is available for this.

This should also be able to be used for the setup, but it didn’t really work with our test device, we had to use WPS and USB. The fact that the printer does not have its own display, only a notification symbol for ADF, paper jam and WLAN, makes it difficult to diagnose errors.

But even without a display, the HP Envy Pro 6420 looks a lot and pleases with its well-made case including lighting. The printer has an automatic document feeder for 35 sheets of paper and a paper input capacity of up to 100 sheets. Both double-sided and borderless printing up to 8.5 x 11 inches is possible.

Thanks to the Internet connection, you can also make use of the “HP Instant Ink” service, which automatically orders a refill when the ink level is low. The Envy Pro 6420 offers a well-rounded configuration, which apart from a touchscreen only lacks LAN and CD printing.

HP Envy Pro 6420 in the test: Too little, too slow

The HP Envy Pro 6420 excels in the test, especially when it comes to graphic printing, while texts and photos produce comparatively mediocre results and the OfficeJet Pro 9012 is the better choice for texts. When printing, the resolution is 4,800 x 1,200 dpi (“dots per inch”).

Despite the average quality, the printer takes plenty of time. In the test, it only managed 7.3 black and white pages per minute and needed a full 1:30 minutes to print a photo.

A graphic takes even longer at 03:15 minutes, but it at least looks high-quality. By the way, it took around 19 seconds in the test before we can print the first time.

When copying, the printer offers a resolution of up to 300 x 300 dpi, while scanning documents up to 1,200 dpi. The printer scans up to 7 images per minute in black and white.

The quality of the copies is convincing, with around 14 seconds for a text copy, the time required is okay for a photo copy, on the other hand, it takes 50 seconds.

In color printing in particular, we also notice high ink consumption, which can become expensive in the long run. While the printer itself is offered quite cheaply at around 100 euros, we come to an average printing cost of 6 cents per text print in 7.5 cents are due for colored pages. This means that the Envy Pro 6420 is inexpensive to buy, but it can be expensive if it is used intensively.

HP Envy Pro 6420 Advantages:

  • Overall good print quality
  • WLAN connection
  • Cheap price

HP Envy Pro 6420 Disadvantages:

  • No touch screen
  • Generally very slow
  • Printing costs are relatively high
